Whale Rock Legal offers opportunities for consultants
Niche City law practice Whale Rock Legal is offering experienced solicitors the opportunity to become legal consultants with the firm.
The consultancy arrangement would be ideal for self-employed solicitors with their own client following who are looking for greater flexibility in working hours without the overheads and administrative burdens normally placed on sole practitioners.
Whale Rock Legal provides outsourced in-house legal support as well as specialist legal services relating to areas such as commodities and derivatives. It also offers traditional services such as dispute resolution, litigation and corporate/commercial.
Under the arrangement, legal consultants’ clients remain their own, with consultants keeping 60 per cent of the fees they bill for these clients or 50 per cent for any work carried out for Whale Rock Legal’s own clients.
Legal consultants are also spared the expense of professional indemnity insurance as they are covered by Whale Rock Legal, while facilities such as a City office, computer equipment and administrative support such as client care, the anti-money laundering process, invoicing and collection are also provided.
Solicitors interested in becoming consultants with Whale Rock Legal must generally bring with them a client following – ideally a portfolio of between £150,000 to £200,000 – although they will be under no obligation to bring work to Whale Rock Legal. Likewise, Whale Rock Legal may refer work to consultants but is under no obligation to do so.
Those who become consultants with Whale Rock Legal tend to be senior associates, partners or senior partners, meaning that applicants should ideally have been qualified for more than five years.
Nigel Kushner, CEO of Whale Rock Legal, said: “This is an arrangement which can bring great benefits to lawyers looking to escape the burden of administrative or management responsibilities while enjoying a better work-life balance. It is an innovation welcomed by those on maternity leave who find it difficult to juggle their workload with their home life and for those in private practice fed up with internal politics and billing pressures.
“As a consultant, your existing clients will benefit from the extra resources available to you through Whale Rock Legal, while our clients will also benefit from the additional knowledge and expertise of our consultants.
“What is most important, however, is that we recognise that your clients will always remain your own, even if you decide to move on.”
