Russian energy giants in talks to explore oil and gas in Uruguay
Two of Russia’s biggest energy firms have been invited to explore for oil and natural gas in Uruguay.
Delegates from the Uruguayan government travelled to Russia to discuss the opportunities with Gazprom and Lukoil. Both firms are also being courted to join bidding on a regasification terminal, which is expected to take place in either May or June.
The terminal would supply liquefied natural gas to Uruguay and its neighbour, Argentina.
Ramon Mendez, energy director at Uruguay’s Energy Ministry, said Gazprom and Lukoil had shown “great interest” in both the exploration project and the regasification plant bid during the talks.
