Tanzania’s natural gas reserves more than double
Further natural gas discoveries off the coast of Tanzania have resulted in the country’s proven reserves standing at 7.5 trillion cubic feet, according to the Eastern African Community (EAC) regional trade bloc.
This is more than double the Tanzanian government’s previously published figure of 3.3 trillion cubic feet.
The EAC said the new figure meant Tanzania had sufficient volumes of reserves to export both natural and electricity to the EAC region.
Gas deposits have been found in four areas of east Africa – Songo Songo island off the eastern coast; in nearby West Songo Songo; Mnazi Bay in south-eastern Tanzania and Mkuranga near the commercial capital of Dar es Salaam.
EAC has said it plans to build a pipeline to distribute the gas to the rest of the region.
