Russia still among largest mineral producers

A new market report on the Russian mining industry has revealed that the country remains one of the world’s largest mineral producers.

According to the report, compiled by India-based consulting organisation Aruvian’s R’Search, Russia accounts for 20 per cent of nickel and cobalt production and five to seven per cent of coal and iron ore production.

It also accounts for a large share of the output of some non-ferrous and rare earth metals, platinum group metals, diamonds, apatite and potassium salts. In addition to these, Russia also contains important reserves of nickel, gold, silver and platinum group metals.

To date, around 20,000 mineral deposits have been explored, with more than one third currently being mined or developed. However, while they only account for five per cent of Russia’s explored mineral resources, they contain more than 70 per cent of the country’s total natural reserves.

Raw metals and aluminium make up the largest share of Russian exports at 65 per cent, according to the report, entitled Metals and Mining Industry in Russia.
