Bangladesh to set up coal power company
A new coal power company is to be set up in Bangladesh, following approval from the country’s government.
The Coal Power Generation Company of Bangladesh Ltd will be operated under the authority of the Power Development Board.
The Bangladeshi government is understood to be interested in a move towards coal as it is seen as a cheaper alternative to gas or oil for generating power. At present, around 87 per cent of the country’s power is generated through gas.
Government energy adviser Taufiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury said the government aimed to set up coal-based power plants with a total capacity of 5,000M. The bidding process for these new plants was almost complete and the government is also plans to finalise an official coal policy.
