Neil Everatt, consultant

Neil Everatt

Neil’s core practice areas include shipping, international trade and shipping arbitration and litigation. In addition to pure shipping matters Neil has had considerable experience in litigation arising out of commodity contracts, especially those for the sale of grain and steel and in more general commercial litigation.

He was admitted as a solicitor in England in 1983 and in Hong Kong in 1986, returning to the UK in 1987 when he joined Lawrence Graham. During 15 years with the firm, he spent time as head of the firm’s Ukrainian office and became a partner in 1993 leading a team in the firm’s shipping and international trade department.

He also handled and litigated predominantly "dry" shipping litigation cases, including charter party disputes, bills of lading disputes, cargo claims, demurrage claims and general average disputes in the High Court, Admiralty Court and international arbitration arenas.

Neil also litigated several large unsafe port claims especially in the Mississippi and Orinoco and jetty/quay damage claims in Greece, Guinea Bissau and Venezuela, and some of the leading English cases on arrest of ships and dangerous cargoes.

From 2002-2007, Neil worked as a part-time in-house legal adviser of Leman Commodities S.A. (now Metinvest, one of the world's largest steel traders) and Fayette International Holdings Ltd and he maintains active links with law firms in Hong Kong and Ukraine. He is a Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution-accredited mediator and has mediated a wide range of disputes between companies and between individuals since 2003.
